The Nun definitely does not live up to the standards of 'The Conjuring'. Nevertheless, it does manage to do a good job of scaring you at a few instances (like any horror movie should).
The plot is kind of lacking, but tolerable. The actors' performances aren't too bad. The visual effects and animation aren't too great.
Apart from all this, however, the primary problem of the film is: the fright factor. Though you do react to the jump-scares, you can tell exactly when one's about to come. This sort of dramatic irony can be used effectively when the viewer knows what's going to happen while the protagonist doesn't, but this hasn't been done either. An attempt is made to make the story seem a bit more intricate by delving into it, but this does not really contribute to making the movie any scarier. In fact, in general, the movie provides too much relief from the scares between scenes. The audience can easily recover from previous scary scenes before the next one comes.I don't normally watch horror movies but, for some reason, ended up watching this one. I can say with confidence that horror movie aficionados are going to feel utterly disappointed with The Nun, especially considering the hype that it had and the fact that it's from the Conjuring Universe. Others may feel some of the tension and shivers but, in my opinion, will still be left with a similar underwhelming feeling.
