For his next outing, following the critically-acclaimed hits Whiplash and La La Land, director Damien Chazelle traverses new territory with his film First Man, a detailed recount of the efforts behind the successful Apollo 11 mission through the eyes of Neil Armstrong, played by Ryan Gosling.
First Man fulfills its purpose: to let the audience witness the incredible journey behind mankind's first trip to the moon. It does not immerse you, but rather lets you view the events from a third-person point of view, as an observer. The meticulously crafted scenes and impromptu dance are characteristic of Chazelle. He again succeeds in creating an amazing cinematic experience. Ryan Gosling is brilliant as Armstrong in depicting the plausible emotions that he went through during his personal struggles. Claire Foy is also great as Janet Shearon, the strong woman who took care of the kids and supported Neil while his head was in the clouds.
Justin Hurwitz again does a great job in creating the tense atmosphere (pun intended) with the soundtrack. Silence is also extensively used to feel the mood.
Overall, First Man is another great creation by Damien Chazelle and a fitting tribute to the Apollo 11. Whether you want to experience the emotional losses and sacrifices made for the mission, or if you just want to learn the history of it through a medium of entertainment, First Man is the movie to watch.
