500 Days of Summer is simply amazing. The concept of the film is beautiful: a contemplation of the 500 days of a relationship. A parallel is drawn between the ephemeral relationship and a season, Summer. You keep switching intermittently between the early euphoric stage of the relationship and the later gloomy stage, highlighting the distinction between the two. A contrast between reminiscences through rose-tinted glasses and the impartial reality is also drawn.
There are other creative visualizations and effects as well that really make this movie stand out. While transporting across the timeline with the days numbered till 500, the backdrop with trees is a representation of the state of the relationship, how close it is to the end of the season. Another example is a scene where the expectations of the protagonist and reality of an event are shown side-by-side concomitantly on the screen. The use of narration was also done well, complemented by some really good songs and different languages. The features of the film such as these definitely make it a lot more appealing and unique than most movies. The cinematography is also brilliant, in the sense that, director Marc Webb has made sure that the specific physical characteristics of the actors that reflect the most feeling are focused upon by the camera.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt's emotions are priceless - whether he is on cloud nine or at rock bottom. Zooey Deschanel looks as though she is straight from a fairy tale. Together (speaking of their onscreen relationship), sometimes they're great, sometimes not so great. It's complicated. Nevertheless, the romantic scenes are quite sweet and you'll often find yourself smiling with joy.
You do not have to be a die-hard romantic or a depressed just-had-a-breakup soul to connect with 500 Days of Summer. Anybody who has the capability to fall in love (most humans, I think) will enjoy this movie.
