Rocketman is a fantastical retelling of Elton John's story that really strikes a chord with the audience, especially his fans.
Right off the bat, lots of parallels can be drawn between the cinematography of Rocketman and the Freddie Mercury biopic from last year, Bohemian Rhapsody. This could be because of the fact that the same director, Dexter Fletcher, directed the Queen lead singer biopic towards the end (he directed the last two weeks of filming after Bryan Singer was fired midway, but received an executive producer credit). Furthermore, the similarities between both John and Mercury's lives are conspicuous, especially in the way that their lows were portrayed. However, there is a significant difference between the two. Rocketman is a lot more dreamy and musical-like, with the actors often breaking into song impromptu. On the other hand, in Bohemian Rhapsody, each song is very much part of what is going on in the movie, be it recording in a studio or at a concert.
However, you don't have to have seen Bohemian Rhapsody to know what to expect from Rocketman. It is essentially a musical recount of and tribute to Elton John's life. The story is told as recalled by John at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. This concept works very well and justifies the dreamy nature of the film.
One of the best parts of the film is Fletcher's great job in deciding which song to place at what moment in the movie, so that it is contextually apt and complements what is going on in the background.
Last but definitely not least, Taron Egerton's performance acting and singing (he has sang before though; he voiced Johnny, the teenage gorilla, in the animated movie Sing, in which he actually covered the song "I'm Still Standing" by John, a song which he has sung in this film as well) is amazing and is by far the best of his career thus far. Bryce Dallas Howard is unrecognizable as Sheila Eileen, John's mother, and is also terrific. Richard Madden's performance fit his role and character very well too.
All in all, Rocketman is definitely a befitting tribute to the legendary musician, and will be enjoyed, whether you want to get a glimpse of the more intimate parts of his life or if you simply want to enjoy his music on the big screen.
And I think it's gonna be a long long time till we see another movie quite like this one...
